One of the most common mistakes I see is confusing partner recruitment with partner success.
Recruiting partners feels like progress. Your ecosystem grows. Your partner count increases. Everyone celebrates the latest logo added to the website.
But partner recruitment is only the beginning.
Every new partner requires an investment of time; from channel managers, sales engineers, marketing, operations, and support. If that partner never reaches the point of consistently identifying opportunities and closing business, you’ve consumed resources without creating revenue.
I’d rather invest in 15 partners who understand our value, know how to position our solution, and consistently bring opportunities than spend those same resources chasing 150 partners who never move beyond onboarding.
Healthy ecosystems aren’t measured by the number of agreements you’ve signed.
They’re measured by the number of partners you’ve activated.
Recruit broadly if you choose.
But invest deeply.
That’s where sustainable channel growth begins.
BR’s Takeaway: An inactive partner isn’t an asset. They’re an unfulfilled expectation.
